KWASU announces new minimum wage for staff, effective December 2024

This decision is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to ensure industrial peace and enhance staff commitment to the institution’s long-term vision.

The announcement was made by Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, OON, the Chairman of the KWASU Governing Council, during a meeting with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Ibadan Zone. The meeting took place on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at the KWASU Business School in Ilorin.

Professor Ambali emphasized that the university’s decision aligns with ASUU’s core values, particularly its focus on creating a conducive workplace and improving the welfare of university staff. He reassured that the Governing Council will continue to implement policies that motivate staff to give their best in contributing to the university’s mission.y

In addition to the approved wage increase, Professor Ambali outlined several staff welfare initiatives, including:
– Salary Adjustments: A consequential salary increase for university staff.
– School Fee Rebate: A 100,000 Naira rebate for biological children of staff members enrolled at KWASU.
– Stipends for Disabled Staff: A monthly 50,000 Naira stipend for staff with disabilities.
– Transportation Subsidy: A subsidized transportation scheme to ease staff movement between Ilorin and Malete.

Professor Ambali also revealed that the university is in discussions with the state government regarding the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) to ASUU members, as well as other concerns raised by the union.

ASUU Advocates for Increased Funding and Support for KWASU:

Comrade Oyegoke Oyebamiji, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU’s Ibadan Zone, stressed the importance of increased funding for Nigerian universities to enable them to meet the growing demands of the education sector. He called on the state government to consider ASUU’s request for the reinstatement of subvention to KWASU and the payment of EAA to staff members.

The ASUU leadership also commended the cooperative relationship between the staff and management at KWASU, which has helped prevent local strikes or industrial actions at the university. Comrade Oyebamiji highlighted that ASUU’s advocacy has led to the establishment of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), a crucial source of support for the infrastructural development and academic enhancement of universities in Nigeria.
