UI First-Class Graduate Reveals Journey Through Challenges to Academic Glory

27 years old, Olayinka Babatunde, the best graduating student from the Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, has set a remarkable example for students across the country. In an exclusive interview, he opens up about his journey, revealing the grit, determination, and resilience that propelled him to academic excellence despite financial struggles and other obstacles.
Lessons from the Journey:
Babatunde’s time at UI was filled with valuable life lessons. He emphasized the importance of adaptability, teamwork, and learning from others. According to him: “The first thing I learned was to accommodate diverse people from different backgrounds. I also realized that ‘it’s not over until it’s over.’ Challenges can be opportunities if you’re willing to reprogram your mindset.”
This positive outlook helped him navigate setbacks and focus on future possibilities. Babatunde also highlighted the value of seeking knowledge from peers, saying, “Instead of envying those who are better, get close to them and learn their tactics.”
Achieving a First-Class Degree:
Graduating with a CGPA of 3.83 out of 4.0 in Linguistics, Babatunde described his success as a combination of discipline, smart work, and personalized study methods. Reflecting on his approach, he shared:
– Adaptability in Study Methods: While many students preferred the “Till Day Break” (TDB) reading strategy, Babatunde found his rhythm in early-morning study sessions.
– Focus on Self-Discovery: He tailored his learning process to suit his strengths, stating, “The first step to self-development is self-evaluation.”
– Leveraging Online Resources: Babatunde expanded his knowledge beyond classroom teachings by researching topics online and watching explanatory YouTube videos.
Battling Financial Hardships:
Despite academic brilliance, Babatunde faced significant financial challenges, particularly when his father fell ill during his third year. With little support, he ventured into online gigs like copywriting, graphic design, and data annotation for lecturers to make ends meet. “I worked for lecturers, acquired data for research, and even took jobs from their friends abroad. It was tough, but I never allowed my circumstances to define me.”
Balancing Academics and Social Life:
Contrary to the stereotype of first-class graduates being overly bookish, Babatunde enjoyed a vibrant social life. He participated in departmental activities, volunteered for NGOs, and even earned the title of “Most Sociable Student” in his hostel. “I believed in a balanced life. While academics were my priority, I also enjoyed cooking, attending events, and contributing to committees.”
Awards and Recognition:
Babatunde’s hard work earned him numerous accolades, including:
– Dean’s Award for Best Graduating Student
– Prof. Ayo Bamgboshe Prize for Excellence in Linguistics
– Dr. Raymond Zard’s Prize for Academic Excellence
These achievements underscore his dedication and passion for excellence.
Advice for Aspiring Scholars:
When asked for advice, Babatunde encouraged students to remain focused and give their all to whatever they do: “Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well. Never give up, even when challenges arise. Success lies in persistence and dedication.”
Olayinka Babatunde’s story is a testament to the power of determination and adaptability. From overcoming financial struggles to excelling academically, his journey is an inspiration to students and young professionals striving for greatness.
