LASU Senate Elects Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics)

Lagos State University (LASU) has elected Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC), Academics, following a Senate election held within the institution.

 

Professor Afisi, a professor of philosophy, secured 198 votes, defeating Prof. Maruf Suraqat Animashaun, who polled only 2 votes. He will take over from Prof. Olufunsho Abayomi Omobitan, whose tenure ends on January 29, 2025.

The Positive Voice gathered that professor Afisi previously served as Head of the Department of Philosophy at LASU from 2019 to 2021. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and has been a member of LASU’s academic staff since 2007, rising to the rank of professor in 2023.

Beyond academics, Afisi has played significant roles in the university’s administration. He was appointed Director of Special Interventions in 2021and later Coordinator of LASU Ventures Ltd. in 2024, positions he held until his election as DVC.

A widely published scholar, Afisi has authored over 60 academic papers and contributed more than 20 chapters to books, including his editorial work on “Karl Popper and Africa: Knowledge, Politics and Development” (Springer, 2021)
