New Federal University of Medicine, Abeokuta Set to Begin Academic Activities
The Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta (FUMMSA), is set to commence academic activities in September 2025. This was revealed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Fatiu Arogundade, during a courtesy visit to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba.
According to Prof. Arogundade, the university will temporarily operate from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), offering Medicine, Nursing, Medical Rehabilitation, and other health-related programmes. The institution awaits a verification visit by the National Universities Commission (NUC), which will determine its admission capacity based on available facilities.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Usman Shanawa, applauded the FMC and its Medical Director, Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu, for their commitment in bringing the vision to life. Shanawa also proposed converting the FMC into a teaching hospital for FUMMSA, to avoid duplicating infrastructure and reduce economic strain.
Professor Musa-Olomu pledged full support, expressing hope that the university will become a centre of excellence in medical education and research.
