AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY faces power outage as electricity bills mount

The Management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, wishes to inform all staff, students, and other members of the University community about the recent power outage caused by disconnection from the grid by Kaduna Electric. This disconnection, which began on the evening of Thursday, 28th November 2024, is due to the University’s inability to clear the accumulated electricity bills.

The institution has been grappling with rising electricity costs since the tariff hike earlier this year. Despite these challenges, ABU has managed to pay over one billion Naira in electricity bills since January 2024, alongside substantial expenses for diesel to sustain basic operations. However, these payments have strained the University’s finances, affecting its ability to fully meet its statutory obligations.

The University Management deeply regrets the inconvenience caused by this situation and appeals for patience and understanding from the entire community. Efforts are being intensified to resolve the matter and restore power supply as soon as possible.
