ASUU gets new President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new president. Piwuna, who is also the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, succeeds Professor Victor Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

 

Piwuna won the election, which was contested between him and Professor Adamu Babayo from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. The decision was made at the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the Union, held in Benin on Sunday.

 

Piwuna’s assumption of office comes amidst speculations of industrial action due to Issues surrounding the sharing formula of the recently released allowances by the Federal Government of Nigeria and ongoing concerns about brain drain in Nigerian universities.
