ATBU dismisses Lecturer Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has taken disciplinary action against one of its academic staff members, Dr. Usman Mohammed Aliyu, by terminating his appointment over allegations of sexual misconduct.

The case came to light after a postgraduate student, Mrs. Kamila Rufai Aliyu from the Department of Chemical Engineering, lodged a formal complaint through her department. She accused the lecturer of sexually harassing her and reportedly claimed he issued threats to jeopardize her academic progress if she failed to yield to his advances.

In response to the complaint, Dr. Aliyu pursued legal action, initiating a defamation suit against the student, the department, and the institution.

Despite the ongoing court process, the university’s Governing Council, as reported in the ATBU Herald (April 22 edition, Vol. 39 No. 5), concluded its internal investigation and upheld his dismissal based on the outcome of the findings.
