Borno government suspends councillor over social media
The Borno State Government has suspended Mele Mohammed, the Councillor representing Yawa Kura in Abadam Local Government Area, over alleged misconduct on social media.
The is was contained in an official letter signed by Bashir Goni Sanda, Acting Director of Local Government Affairs on behalf of the Commissioner, obtained by SaharaReporters.
The suspension follows Mohammed’s public disrespect of the Executive Chairman of Abadam Local Government, Malam Fatori, through social media platforms — an action described as a violation of existing laws governing the conduct of public officials.
The letter, which was also copied to the Executive Chairman, stated that the suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of further investigations into the matter.
Bashir noted that Mohammed’s action was deemed unbecoming of a person holding such an esteemed public office and said the government viewed the incident as a serious breach of protocol and public accountability.
The statement read, “I am directed to write and refer to the above subject matter and to convey approval of your suspension from office as councillor of Yawa Kura Ward in Abadam Local Government Area pending your case is determined.”
“The suspension became necessary as a result of misconduct unbecoming of a person holding such an esteemed position to disrespect the Executive Chairman of Local Government through social media which is against the Law,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, approved the appointment of Bunu Bukar as the new Accountant General of the state.
The appointment is contained in a statement issued in Maiduguri on Monday by the Special Adviser to the governor, on Media and Strategy, Dauda Iliya.
According to the statement, the appointment is in line with the powers conferred on the governor under Section 208, Subsection 2(c) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
Bukar will succeed the current Accountant General, Alhaji Bura Usman, who is due for retirement on May 8, 2025.
Before his appointment, Bukar served as Director of Treasury Operations at the Office of the Accountant General in the Borno State Ministry of Finance.
A seasoned financial expert, Bukar is a Fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (FANAN) and a member of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria.
He holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) with a specialisation in finance, a postgraduate diploma in accountancy, and other academic and professional qualifications.
The statement noted that Bukar will bring to his new role over 16 years of experience in the banking sector and 13 years in public service.
While congratulating Bukar on his appointment, Zulum urged him to demonstrate professionalism, transparency, financial integrity, and accountability in the discharge of his duties.
The governor also commended the outgoing Accountant General, Bura Usman, for his meritorious service and contributions to the development of the state.
The appointment takes effect from May 8, 2025.
