FUOYE commences 9th convocation ceremonies, sets to convocate 8,444 students

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti has commenced its 9th Convocation Ceremonies, marking a week of celebration, achievements, and infrastructural expansion.
As gathered from the University’s website, the event was officially launched with a press conference led by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, underscores the university’s commitment to academic excellence, research advancement, and community engagement.
The convocation week features a robust lineup of activities, including:
Project Commissioning: Key infrastructural projects such as a 1,000-seater auditorium, Faculty of Law Complex, Professorial Complex, and a state-of-the-art Innovation Hub will be inaugurated.
Free Healthcare Outreach: The university will provide medical services to residents of Oye-Ekiti and Ikole-Ekiti at the palaces of the Oloye and Elekole, respectively.
Academic and Staff Recognition: The Vice-Chancellor will present Staff Awards of Excellence, recognizing outstanding contributions to the university.
Convocation Lecture: Architect Sonny Sylva Echono, OON, Executive Secretary of TETFUND, will deliver the keynote lecture.
Degree and Honorary Awards: A total of 8,444 students, including 177 First-Class graduates, will be conferred with degrees across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Additionally, five distinguished personalities will receive honorary degrees.
Since 2021, FUOYE has witnessed a significant increase in academic staff promotions, with over 1,900 personnel advancing in their careers. The institution has also intensified research efforts, publishing over 2,169 documents in Scopus and fostering global collaborations with organizations such as Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (Germany) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
FUOYE continues to expand its physical and academic infrastructure, including:
30 new lecture halls and modern laboratories
Completion of the Fasina Conference Centre
Development of staff quarters in partnership with Federal Mortgage Homes
Implementation of a Green Revolution Initiative, promoting sustainable agriculture.
FUOYE has made remarkable strides in sports. At the 2024 concluded Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Games, FUOYE dominated the Male 100m race, winning Gold, and secured a Silver in the Female 200m race. In Taekwondo, FUOYE athletes triumphed in the 73-weight category, earning a Gold medal. Additionally, FUOYE earned Silver in the Judo competition. The football team of FUOYE achieved exceptional success, ranking 1st in Ekiti State, 2nd in Nigeria, and 3rd in Africa.
Professor Fasina reaffirmed FUOYE’s strategic commitment to innovation, sustainability, and global relevance. The university plans to establish an independent power station, launched the One-Day Vice-Chancellor Initiative, and expand its research and endowment programs.
“As we celebrate these achievements, we remain steadfast in our mission to position FUOYE as a leading institution in Africa,” said Professor Fasina.
The 9th Convocation Ceremonies conclude on February 23, 2025, with a thanksgiving service at the university chapel.
