Group Defends LASUSTECH VC, Dismisses Corruption Allegations

A civil society group, the Campaign for Democracy and Justice (CDJ), has strongly defended Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), following recent allegations of corruption leveled against him.

At a press briefing in Lagos, CDJ Chairman Ishola Adeshina described the allegations as not only unfounded but also a deliberate attack on the integrity of a leader known for his progressive approach to leadership and genuine commitment to the university community. Adeshina emphasized that Professor Odusanya has built a reputation as an ethical, transparent, and student-friendly administrator.

According to the group, the Vice-Chancellor’s unwavering dedication to improving staff and student welfare has made him a target for those resistant to change. “It is rare to see a university head prioritize students’ well-being and staff satisfaction the way Professor Odusanya does. His accessibility and open-door leadership style set him apart,” Adeshina remarked.

He added that the professor’s intolerance for misconduct, including any form of harassment or unethical behavior, may have provoked those benefiting from such acts to launch a smear campaign. The group stated that internal inquiries and testimonies gathered from students and staff point to an orchestrated attempt to discredit a reform-minded leader.

“From what we’ve gathered, this isn’t about corruption—it’s about a clash between integrity and vested interests. He has insisted on a culture of accountability, which has unsettled some factions,” Adeshina said.

CDJ further criticized the alleged misuse of civil society platforms to lend credibility to what it described as a campaign of falsehood. It questioned the legitimacy of the organization behind the accusations, noting discrepancies in names and designations attached to the statements circulated in the media.

The group stressed that Professor Odusanya’s performance since assuming office is not only measurable but also commendable. They pointed out his record of timely salary payments and consistent staff welfare packages, even during financial constraints.

CDJ called on the Lagos State Government and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) not to allow unfounded claims to derail the progress being recorded at LASUSTECH. It urged them to distinguish between genuine concerns and politically-motivated distractions.

“Dragging his name through the mud in a bid to destroy years of hard-earned reputation is not just unjust but dangerous for the moral fabric of the society,” the group warned.

In conclusion, the Campaign for Democracy and Justice urged Professor Odusanya to stay focused and continue his transformative leadership at LASUSTECH, assuring him of public support in the face of what they describe as “malicious and unsubstantiated attacks.”
