KWASU Reacts to Viral Video: Vice-Chancellor Addresses Students, Announces Disciplinary Actions

Kwara State University (KWASU) has become the center of attention following the circulation of a video showing students wearing the institution’s matriculation gowns and engaging in behavior deemed inappropriate and unworthy of an academic institution.
The Positive Voice news outlet gathered this on their X handle on Monday, January 20, where the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, condemned the actions captured in the video, describing them as a gross misrepresentation of the institution’s values and a threat to its integrity.
Addressing the university community, Professor Jimoh expressed disappointment over the conduct of the students, noting that it undermines the hard work of the academic staff and disrespects the foundational principles of the institution. He described the behavior as “a ridicule of the image and integrity of the processes of the institution, which are founded on principles of excellence.”
In his statement, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the importance of protecting the reputation of KWASU, emphasizing that the university’s image is a collective responsibility of both students and staff. “KWASU is yours! You will, like the thousands who have graduated from Kwara State University, hold her certificate, go around the world with it, and do great things. The integrity of Kwara State University is ours to protect,” he stated.
The Positive Voice gathered further that the students involved in the incident have been identified and will face disciplinary action as a deterrent to others. Professor Jimoh reiterated the university’s zero-tolerance policy for actions that trivialize the institution’s values. “We will resist any attempt to trivialize the hard work of many years by anyone from any quarters,” he added.
In a message of encouragement to the broader student body, the Vice-Chancellor urged students to focus on their academic pursuits and to avoid any behavior that could tarnish the university’s reputation. He reminded them of the achievements of past KWASU graduates, who have demonstrated excellence globally, and encouraged them to follow in their footsteps.
“There are thousands of KWASU graduates spread all around the world doing great feats in different areas. Soon, you all too will go into the world holding the KWASU certificate, and I know you would be proud to say you hold a degree from Kwara State University as your predecessors have shown the world that the KWASU graduate is an excellent and formidable individual,” he remarked.
The Vice-Chancellor assured students of the university’s commitment to their growth and success, pledging to provide the support needed to help them become the best version of themselves. “On our part, we will spare nothing to ensure you become the best version that you can be,” he promised.
In conclusion, Professor Jimoh urged the KWASU community to unite in preserving the institution’s reputation, stating, “KWASU belongs to you, KWASU belongs to me, KWASU belongs to all of us. We must protect her name and image.”
