Lagos State University of Education ASUU Threatens Strike

The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of an impending strike over unresolved issues of poor welfare packages and salary irregularities.

According to one of our correspondents, the union’s chairman, Dr. Akolade Lapite, raised these concerns during a press briefing in Lagos. He disclosed that the approved 25–35% salary increment for tertiary institutions has not been fully implemented at LASUED. Instead, the January 2025 salary template revealed inconsistent increments, with some staff receiving as little as 5%, 8%, or 10%.

“This inconsistency is shocking and unacceptable. Our members are also owed 72 months of salary arrears, and statutory hazard and transport allowances remain unpaid since 2013,” Dr. Lapite lamented. He further noted that the delay in fulfilling these obligations has dampened morale among academic staff and hindered their ability to deliver quality education.

The Positive Voice gathered that union members are also dissatisfied with the university’s infrastructural shortcomings, which they say fail to reflect its upgraded status as a university. A union member, Victor Akinola, highlighted the lack of operational vehicles and unpaid relocation allowances as key issues.

“Many staff are unable to relocate to the Epe campus due to unpaid relocation allowances. This has forced some of us to endure long commutes, which not only affects us but also impacts students, as exhausted lecturers cannot perform optimally,” Akinola explained.

The union has called on the Lagos State Government to urgently address these issues to avert a strike that could disrupt academic activities. *The Positive Voice* gathered that the union is demanding immediate payment of outstanding allowances, salary arrears, and proper implementation of the approved salary increment.
