STRIKE LOOMS AGAIN AS ASUU DEMANDS ACTION ON 2009 AGREEMENT

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government to honour the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement or face a nationwide strike.
ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, speaking at a press conference in Abuja, highlighted nine unresolved issues, including the stalled renegotiation process since 2017, withheld salaries from the 2022 strike, unpaid entitlements under the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), and delayed revitalisation funds.
He decried the non-payment of earned academic allowances and broken promises, including the failure to release the promised N150 billion and adjust irregular allowances by 2026.
Piwuna also criticised political interference in university leadership and the victimisation of union members in state universities such as Kogi and Lagos State Universities, citing job insecurity and salary denial.
He called for a national education summit to address funding, autonomy, and academic welfare, insisting that universities must be centres for national solutions, not political battlegrounds.
“We are open to dialogue but will not tolerate continued erosion of our rights,” Piwuna said, urging public and international support.
BACKGROUND:
The 2009 agreement aimed to improve funding, welfare, and infrastructure in public universities. Its repeated non-implementation has triggered numerous ASUU strikes, most recently, five-month strike in 2022, crippling academic activities nationwide.
