SULE LAMIDO UNIVERSITY, KAFIN GETS NEW VICE CHANCELLOR

• “The Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar A. Namadi, FCA, and Visitor to Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, has approved the appointment of His Royal Highness, Alhaji Baba Umar Faruk II, OON, as the new Chancellor of Sule Lamido University Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State. The appointment was in accordance with Sections 8 and 2 of the Second Schedule of the University Law 2013 as amended, which empowers the Visitor to appoint a Chancellor for the University. According to the Secretary to the Government of Jigawa State, Malam Bala Ibrahim, the appointment came after wide and careful consultations prior to the decision, adding that the Emir has already accepted the appointment and has assured the Governor and the people of Jigawa of his readiness to serve.

MEET THE NEW CHANCELLOR

His Royal Highness, Alhaji Umar Faruk II, OON, was born on Monday 25th March 1957 in Katagum Emirate. He attended the Kano State College of Arts and Sciences from 1974-1976. He then proceeded to Bayero University Kano where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

In addition to his academic qualifications, Alhaji Umar Faruk II, also attended the French National War College, Paris, Ports Security and Safety Course organized by International Maritime Organization and Public Policy Course organised by the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON).

Before ascending to the throne of his late father, this quintessential monarch, served as Director Budget, at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Director, Navy, Federal Ministry of Defense, Director, Investment and Economic Development, Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory, Director, Maritime Services, Director of Administration, Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation and Director, Human Resources, Federal Ministry of Interior. He was appointed Permanent Secretary, in 2010 and served in the Ministries of Special Duties, Water Resources, Sold Minerals and Youth Development.

He was turbaned as the 12th Emir of Katagum on Friday 15th December 2017.

A recipient of the National honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger, OON, he was appointed Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in July 2021.

As a highly revered traditional ruler in Bauchi State, the Emir of Katagum, has played significant roles in the development and stability of his emirate and beyond in areas of Educational Development, Community Development and Peace building, Health and Social Welfare, Cultural Preservation and Economic Empowerment.

He awards the degrees of the institution at Convocation ceremonies when he is present. Revered traditional rulers and accomplished senior citizens are the ones that often get appointed as Chancellors of universities.”
