Tinubu Appoints New Governing Councils for UNIABUJA, and others

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of new governing councils for three federal universities—University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka.
The appointments were announced on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. This move follows the earlier dissolution of UNIABUJA’s governing council and the removal of its Vice Chancellor, Aisha Maikudi, in February 2025, a decision that sparked public debate over the legality of her appointment and the processes involved.
For UNIABUJA, the new council members include Prof. Rosemary Iriowen Egonmwan from the South-South, Dr. Adedeji Adefuye from the South-West, Prof. Sarki Abba Abdulkadir from the North-West, and Prof. Aminu Mohammed Dukku from the North-East.
At the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), the appointees are Rt. Hon. Ogbonna Eugene Odo from the South-East and Muhammad Inuwa Tahir, mni, from the North-West.
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, now has Dr. Nkem Okeke, Ofoke Chukwuma Charles Ugbala, both from the South-East, Dame Amina Patrick Yakowa from the North-West, and Nojeeb Oriola Agunbiade from the South-West as council members.
The new appointments reflect a renewed emphasis on balanced regional representation and improved governance in the Nigerian university system.
