UI Honors Late Education Icon by Naming Administrative Building in His Memory

The University of Ibadan (UI) has officially dedicated the administrative building of its Postgraduate College to the late Professor Sanya Onabamiro, celebrating his lasting impact on Nigerian education and scientific research, four decades after his passing.

At a ceremony held on Tuesday, the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, highlighted Prof. Onabamiro’s pioneering work, particularly his groundbreaking research on guinea-worm disease, which earned him a distinguished reputation among academics.

Prof. Adebowale emphasized that the naming of the building is a tribute to Prof. Onabamiro’s invaluable contributions to educational policy and scientific advancement.

In attendance, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo praised the university’s decision, calling Prof. Onabamiro a national icon whose legacy continues to inspire.

“Honoring those who laid the foundation of our progress is crucial,” Obasanjo said. “A river that forgets its source will eventually dry up. Prof. Onabamiro’s legacy of diligence and integrity remains a beacon for future generations.”

Senator Ibikunle Amosun, former governor of Ogun State, also commended the late scholar, recalling his vital role in shaping education policies in Nigeria’s Western region, including the landmark compulsory education policy.

Members of Prof. Onabamiro’s family were present, with his daughter, Mrs. Enitan Onabamiro, delivering a heartfelt tribute. She described her father as a dedicated family man and a passionate advocate for excellence, highlighting his tenure as Minister of Education and Agriculture and his commitment to promoting indigenous language use in early childhood education.

“My father insisted on speaking Yoruba at home to ensure we stayed connected to our cultural roots,” she said. “His vision to preserve our heritage through language is something we continue to uphold.”

The ceremony concluded with calls from all attendees to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Prof. Onabamiro, ensuring his contributions remain alive in Nigerian academia and society.
