UNIZIK ASUU Applauds Lecturer Assaulted by Student Over TikTok Video

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) branch, has commended Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, for his calm demeanor after being assaulted by a female student.

The incident occurred when Dr. Okoye attempted to pass through a hallway where the student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chiamaka Precious of the Department of History and International Studies, was recording a TikTok video. The student allegedly attacked him for disrupting her recording, even biting him in the process.

In a letter signed by the UNIZIK ASUU Chairman, Kingsley Ubaoji, and Secretary, Joseph Onyejiaka, the union praised Dr. Okoye’s restraint and professionalism.

“ASUU wishes to commend Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye for his exemplary display of maturity and civility in the face of this violent assault. His composure not only reflects his character but also upholds the integrity of our union and the university community at large,” the letter stated.

The union also acknowledged the swift intervention of the Acting Vice-Chancellor in addressing the matter, reinforcing the university’s commitment to a safe and respectful academic environment.

“The prompt response of the university authorities reassures staff of their protection and highlights the institution’s dedication to maintaining discipline,” ASUU noted.

Following the incident, UNIZIK management took decisive action by expelling the student and ordering her immediate departure from the campus.

ASUU reiterated its commitment to defending the rights and interests of its members while fostering a conducive learning atmosphere.

“We stand in solidarity with Dr. Okoye and assure him of our unwavering support,” the statement concluded.
